Elementary Flying Training.
All Military Pilots from all three of the services start their flying careers by conducting Elementary Flying Training. It is broken down in to three phases.
1. Basic Land Survival
2. Ground School
3. Flying.

Basic Land Survival.For the Army and RAF, Basic Land Survival is conducted at RAF Cranwell. For the Navy it is conducted at St Mawgan. It is designed to give aircrew basic survival knowledge knowledge should they need to crash land in the training / friendly environment. It lasts for 2 weeks. It consists of 1 week 'theory' learning all the principals of survival as well water survival and parachute drills. The second week is spent on Exercise Moortrex putting in to practice all the skills taught.
Ground School.Ground School is conducted at RAF Cranwell and lasts for approximately 5 weeks and covers the following topics:
1. Meteorology 2. Principals of Flight 3. Air Operations. 4. Navigation. 5. Aircraft Technical. 6. Flight Instruments and systems. Elementary Flying TrainingElementary Flying Training (EFT) lasts for up to 6 months and is conducted on either the Grob Tutor 115E or the Grob Prefect 120TP. It is mainly conducted at RAF Barkston Heath and RAF Wittering, however may be conducted at other locations with University Air Squadrons.
The Syllabus lasts for approximately 40 hours and covers the following elements. General Handling (11 hours) First Solos (1 hour) General Handling and Test (9 hours) Instrument Flying and Test (4 hours) Navigation and Test (10 hours) Composite of everything taught and test (5 hours) |
